An Amazing Week

Okay, so up until GT's 4th quarter collapse against Virginia Tech on Thursday, the 7 previous days had been one of the best weeks I can ever remember. Sure, I worked a few of those days in my usual graveshift job, but let's look at those 7 days.

Wednesday, October 20th:
My much-beloved Boston Red Sox complete the greatest comeback in the history of sports, rallying from a 3-game deficit to win the American League Championship Series 4 games to 3. Tonight's game capped off that comeback, thrashing the New York Yankees 10-3 at Yankee Stadium.

The Red Sox complete their historic 4-3 ALCS win in New York.

Thursday, October 21st:
After finishing up a night at work, I packed up and boarded a plane bound for Raleigh, North Carolina. Most of the day was spent flying around the southeast U.S. - I left Tallahassee around 7pm, flying into Orlando. I hadn't eaten dinner yet, and just figured I could get some food in Orlando when I landed around 845pm or so. Not so - the whole damned airport was shut down, thus forcing me to wait until getting some airline pretzels on the flight to Raleigh. Good times. Oh, and being bored in the airport, I decided to read Dan Brown's Angels and Demons - god bless eBooks and being able to store a couple hundred of them on your laptop. Sure helps to cut down the boredom.

Friday, October 22nd:
Arrived around midnight in Raleigh, promptly went to bed after giving both April and Laura their 23rd birthday presents. Today is Laura's birthday (April's was the 2nd) so after a day of them spending time in class and lab - and me reading my book - we head out for some birthday celebrations. First up is a trip to Kanki, a Japanese steakhouse. Dinner was good, and I got to meet one of Laura's friends, the very cool Sarah. After that, we headed to a coffee shop in Chapel Hill, the very cool outdoor Caffe Driade, where we sat around and watched the band One Less Frame perform an extended set. The evening was very chill, extremely relaxing. I couldn't help but think that this was the life - listening to great music while sitting around with my friends. The night was a bit chilly, but warm Mocha Lattes and hot chocolates kept us warm. [Side note: I still curse the Weather Channel for telling me it would be in the mid-60s all weekend in Chapel Hill, when in reality it barely cracked 55 during the day. Thanks guys - glad I "accidentally" packed a sweatshirt.] Anyways, the music of One Less Frame was so good that I decided to pick up their two CDs, which set me back $8, but it was well worth it. Go to their website above and listen to the song "Full Circle" - it's good stuff.

So after leaving the cafe, we headed to Franklin Street (where all the bars are in Chapel Hill) for some birthday-boozin'. April, Laura, and myself were joined by a sorority sister and friend of Laura's, Meg. I didn't really know what to think of Meg at first, mainly because Laura told me she was the "epitome of a sorority girl" - something which made me wince at first. What Laura meant was that she dressed like a sorority girl: very snappy and coordinated. And with a lot of pink. So once we all got situated in The East End (or "The Martini Bar" as they call it) I ended up seated next to Meg and we started talking. Now I've met quite a few women in my life - I'm social enough, I talk to a fair amount of people - but I've never met somebody in my life and left with such a stunning first-impression of somebody as I did with Meg. We just really clicked, more than I remember clicking with anybody I've met in a really, really long time (if ever). I was sad to leave at the end of the night, but our birthday girl had clearly hit her limit for the night, and it was time to tuck her in. Thus, Friday came to a close.

Saturday, October 23rd:
After sleeping through the early morning and watching some college football (Maryland! How in the hell did you lose to Clemson? You suck!) I got up and read some more. Now, I love visiting my friends at UNC, but they're both graduating in December. One thing I won't miss is that when I come to visit them, I stay in the dorms. The bathroom in the dorms require an electronic pass-key to enter, and as they're both girls, they don't have keys to the men's bathroom. So whenever I want to use the bathroom or take a shower (without walking to a completely different bathroom) I've got to walk down to a male floor, stand and wait outside the bathroom, and hope for somebody to come open it for me. Good times, right?

Anyway, so after letting Laura know what I thought about the previous night and miss Meg, she got me to go shopping with herself and Meg. Now, shopping's not exactly something that I love to do (unless it's electronics stuff) but given that I wanted to get out of the dorm room for a while and the company would be worth it, I went. So after spending an hour or so at Old Navy, Laura and I returned home and picked up April, then headed off to the movies.

We saw Team America: World Police - the latest creation from the South Park geniuses Matt Stone and Trey Parker. I have to say, I absolutely loved the movie. It was so amazingly over-the-top, and like South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut it did a great job at insulting just about every single group it possibly could.

After the movie, I watched Game 1 of the World Series, a close 11-9 Red Sox win capped off by Mark Bellhorn's game-winning home-run. Way to go, Mark.

When the game was over, Meg came over and she, April, and I headed out to Franklin Street again, to the martini bar again. Meg and I hit it off well again [at this point, I'd like to point out that Meg indeed does have a boyfriend, so we're just friends being friendly, okay?] and after a couple drinks and a couple places, we hit 2AM, Last Call in Chapel Hill. April says she's tired and wants to go home, so we all walk back to April and Laura's dorm [Laura stayed home to work on homework - boo!]. Meg and I however wanted to keep drinking, so I went with Meg to her place where on the way, we were pulled over by an asshole Chapel Hill cop who gave her the fifth degree in rediculous questioning. Highlights of the 5-0's questions: "Did you eat dinner tonight?" and "Did your passenger have anything to drink?" Absolutely rediculous stuff. So when we finally get to Meg's, we sit around, drink a beer or two, and talk until 6AM or so. She offers me a loveseat to sleep on, but as it was a wee bit smaller than me, she just drove me home where I snuck back into the girls' dorm room and went to bed.

Sunday, October 24th:
Spent most of the day just lounging around, watched Atlanta get absolutely killed by the Chiefs. Sunday was a good, relaxing day. The girls were busy with work and school, so I entertained myself. Though I was happy to see both Laura and April, I do have to admit that I did do a fair share of reading and watching TV as the girls were preoccupied a good deal of time. But it's their last semester of school, and we're near the end, so I can't blame them for working. Watched the Red Sox win game 2 of the World Series.

Monday, October 25th:
Today was a long, long day. I woke up around 630am, and around 10am, flew from Raleigh to Atlanta, where I would have to wait until 415PM to fly back to Tallahassee. I didn't mind this so much, as the Atlanta airport is one of the few airports that I really don't mind spending a lot of time in. I've been through Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport so many times in the past 5 or 6 years that I pretty much know where everything is, so I had plenty of ways to keep myself busy. Grabbed some lunch, plugged in the laptop, and just screwed around and killed time till I flew back to Tallahassee. When I finally did get home around 630PM or so, I couldn't sleep. At 1030PM, I headed off to work, where only by drinking over 450mg of caffeine and some act of god was I able to stay awake the whole night. I got home from work after 730AM and collapsed.

Tuesday, October 26th:
Highlight of the day, without a doubt, was watching the Red Sox win Game 3 of the World Series. With a 3-0 lead, the unthinkable was now probable. The Sox were gonna win it all. As a Sox fan, I really didn't know what to think or do.

Wednesday, October 27th:

The Sox win their first World Series in 86 years. The picture just about says it all.

So over the course of 7 days I met an amazing woman, one who I will probably be friends with for a really long time - I got to experience an extremely chill night and discovered some good new music - and my favorite pro sports team wins the biggest championship series in the past 50 years.

Damn, what a great week.

2004 ALCS: Boston vs. New York

Oh. my. God.

Remember to breathe, Matt. Remember to breathe.

Where do I possibly start talking about this series? The two best teams in the American League once again square off in yet another round of the greatest rivalry in all of sports. No other rivalry even comes close. These two teams and their fans hate each other so much that the slightest thing - like seeing a Yankee cap across a crowded room - can make their blood instantly boil. I hate the Yankees with every ounce of my being, and the sheer jubilation of seeing them not only lose, but lose badly to my Red Sox in this fashion - it's just indescribable.

Let's start at the beginning of this year-long saga. Game 7 of the 2003 ALCS, Yankee Stadium is the scene. I'm living in Knoxville, Tennessee at the time, watching the game at home after a long day's work. I'm floating on a cloud, seeing my Red Sox beat the Yankees, when the unimaginable happens - a huge managerial screw-up leaves Pedro Martinez out in the game for too long and the Yankees tie the game and force extra innings. I was so nervous I could barely sit still - the dread that I and every other Red Sox fan feel when our boys get in this situation is just horrific. We know the Yankees are going to win. We know that the Sox will lose again. We know the heartbreak is coming, yet we never want to face it. It's like knowing the end of a scary movie, but still turning your eyes away from the moment of climax in the story. And of course, that moment came - Aaron Boone launched an extra-innings HR off Tim Wakefield to send the Yankees to the World Series. Nobody in Boston cared that the Yankees ended up losing the World Series to the Marlins, all they knew was that they hated those assholes in pinstripes. That, and that it wasn't over.

In the offseason, the whole A-Rod trade fiasco just made things worse. The "Evil Empire" of sports once again got a top notch free-agent, and all seemed right for the Yankees to repeat again. Adding an "ace" in Kevin Brown along with Gary Sheffield's incredible bat made the Yankees by far and away the team to beat in most people's minds. To that point, I'll agree. Even though the Red Sox had an incredible acquisition of their own [Curt Schilling, god bless him] they were still overshadowed by that damned Steinbrenner and his free-spending ways.

But 2004 was the year the Sox fought back (literally).

Get out of my face, A-Rod

The 2004 regular season shaped up to be exactly what everybody thought it would be for the Yankees and the Red Sox: a close fight to the finish. The Yankees got out to a dominant lead in the division, despite being totally owned by the Red Sox early in the season series [Just ask Alex Rodriguez (pic above) who got in Jason Varitek's face and then very shortly afterwards, found out what catcher's mitt tastes like]. But in the final months of the season, the newly defensively retooled Boston Red Sox went on a tear of their own, coming up just shy of the Yankees for the division title, instead settling with the AL Wild Card.

Sad Yankees.

After making short work of an Anaheim Angels club who exhausted themselves in a struggle with Oakland for the AL West title, the Red Sox awaited their destiny to play those damned New York Yankees again.

Game 1, ALCS. Curt Schilling isn't himself, and barely lasts a few innings because of the ankle injury he sustained in the ALDS. His mobility is nearly shot, his accuracy is non-existant. Couple these with the fact that Mike Mussina pitches probably the finest extra-innings game of his life, a perfect game through 6 innings, and you have the makings of a Yankees rout. I left for work once Mark Bellhorn hit a single to break up the perfect game/no hitter [Sox down 8-0], only to arrive at work to see that the Sox had put up 5 runs to turn the potential rout into a competitive game. After putting up two more runs to bring score to 8-7 the Sox subsequently blew the game, allowing the Yankees to put up 2 more insurance runs to ice the game, 10-7. I wasn't happy with the result, obviously. I expected my Red Sox to come to the gate with guns blazing against the Yankees, but they came to the plate with nothing. I felt like I was watching a completely different team than the one I had watched all season. Those Red Sox were not afraid of New York and had overwhelming confidence. These Red Sox were scared and beaten down.

Game 2. Another rediculous outing by a Yankees pitcher, this time it's Lieber. Yankees put up 3 on Pedro Martinez and cruise to a 3-1 win. For a pitching staff as maligned as the Yankees' before the series, it's almost unimaginable that they could string together two mind-blowing starts like this. Sox fans begin to get really worried at this point.

Game 3. A total ass-beating, 19-8 Yankees. I couldn't even watch all of this game, it was just too ugly. In fact, I totally don't want to talk about Game 3. It didn't happen. Though I will state this - you'd think that a team that has won 3 games in a row and put up 19 runs in their last game would be able to steamroll any team in their path. Not quite so. Oh, and Red Sox have hit the "High" level on the Red Sox Nation Advisory System:

Game 4. I tuned into this game, just hoping that my Sox could win at least one game to prevent the sweep - and what a game it turned out to be. New York, with all the momentum on their side as a team could have, just couldn't match Boston's heart and desire. The Red Sox pushed everyone to their limits, and Slappy Papi, David Ortiz, hit a 2 run HR in the bottom of the 12th to give the Red Sox their first win of the series, 6-4. Sox fans are still skeptical, but some smidgens of hope remain.

Game 5. Another extra-innings thriller. This time, everybody and their mother pitches for both teams, and somehow David Ortiz manages to do it again and win for the Sox in the 14th inning, sending the series back to New York. Sox fans are beginning to put down the nooses and knives, and hope is in the air.

Game 6. A-Fraud decided that since the Yankees can't compete with Schilling's dominating pitching, that he'll resort to cheating to help the Yankees overcome the Red Sox. Problem is, A-Fraud got caught. And what's with the limp-wristed slap, Alex? Put some muscle into it you little girl you. Sox win this one on the shoulders of Curt Schilling's phenomenally heroic pitching performance. Guy's basically got no ankle at all, and he still destroys the Yankee hitters. Simply incredible. Historically speaking, this is the first time a team down 0-3 has ever forced a Game 7.

A-Fraud is a punk bitch.

Game 7.

Feared words. Words that bring back memories of Aaron Boone and Yankee jubilation.

Are the Red Sox truly cursed? Did they only come so far only to fail when victory's finally in their grasp? Is history going to just keep repeating it's hideously unfair trend?

Not this season. 2004 is the year of the Red Sox.

Instead of making game 7 a nail-biter, Johnny Damon decides that he will take all the drama out of it, hitting a grand slam on the first pitch he sees from Javier Vasquez in the 2nd inning to push Boston to a 6-0 lead. Two innings later, he belts another 1st pitch from Vasquez into the upper deck, give the Sox 8 runs on the day and blowing the game wide open. The Sox played hold-em for the rest of the game, and despite allowing 3 runs [the Sox put up 2 more insurance runs late] the Sox cruised to an easy 10-3 victory, and made baseball history by being the first MLB team ever down 0-3 in a series to win the series. 4 games in a row, my Sox beat the Yankees.

Sox celebrate ALCS game 7 win

Jesus, I get goosebumps just looking at that picture.

Now it's off to the World Series. I'm planning on going.

2004 NCAA Football Predictions [Weeks 1-9]

So, I missed Week 7 due to tragedy in the family, and Week 10 due to a busy work schedule. After missing two weeks so early in the season, I gave up my picks (which take a lot of time) and just left my previous posts up. Here are all my NCAA Football Prediction posts from 2004 merged together in one place [previously found on my now-defunct sports blog].

Things of note: I hate Miami, but damn GT made them look good by playing like shit. That's two godawful games in a row for GT. Congrats to Navy for moving to 5-0, and to UCF for losing to possibly the worst team in Division IA football and falling to 0-4. It's going to be a long time before the Golden Knights see a W, I'd bet. Good job Northwestern Wildcats - NU is a team I always love to see do well in the Big Ten (Eleven?) because if NU is doing well, Michigan, Penn State, Ohio State, and the other overrated teams are struggling. Keep it up, Cats. Ole Miss almost lost to a cupcake, but Fresno State did. Kiss those BCS dreams goodbye, Bulldogs. Congrats to Rice for putting up 63 points and subsequently giving up 70 in Division IA's highest scoring regulation game. Way to go, Owls. Whoo. Congrats to KSU and WVU for choking, and to Vanderbilt for actually winning an SEC game.

Things of note: When did Washington become such a joke of a team? And can somebody take note that I actually picked UL-Monroe AND Southern Methodist to win a game? Every time I have to pick a Pac-10 game, I feel like it's a crapshoot if USC isn't involved. Nobody plays defense at all (sans USC) and the teams are as inconsistent as they get (see Oregon State and Arizona State).

And what the hell is up with NINE teams changing places in the rankings, despite not playing a game? What is that shit?

WEEK 1

Okay, after a .734 season last year, I'm back picking the winners of NCAA football games. I'm going to try to pick every single game with two I-A teams, but things like Tuesday and Wednesday games might throw me a curve later in the year.

Oh, and while I'm thinking of it, join my free Yahoo! College Football Pick'Em league. League number is 6654, password is 'andscrewuf'. It's a fun little competition me and my friends have every year, and even though I always win, they enjoy playing and getting beat. And the trash talking is usually pretty good too.

Now, for the picks. They're sorted alphabetically by home team. My picks are in BOLD CAPS. Correct picks are in red and incorrect picks are in yellow. Final score in [brackets]. And for your and my viewing pleasure, Yahoo's Rankings and Yahoo's Odds. Rankings are AP. And now, the picks:

1994, New Albums, Other New Stuff

So, amongst my friends and myself, 1994 is widely regarded as the best year for music in our lifetimes. Some of the more notable albums from 1994 are as follows:
Now, that's 9 extremely solid albums. Weezer's self-titled is one of my favorites of all time, as is Smash, Stranger Than Fiction, and John Henry. So after perusing this list, it's hard to see another year that could possibly beat 1994. But strangely enough, the year 2003 is slowly gaining ground in my mind - and could very well be better than 1994. The biggest problem with trying to make a decision like this is simply longevity - I don't know how well the albums from 2003 will hold up a decade from now, as I've only been listening to them for a matter of months. The great albums of 1994 have passed the test of time, and 10 years later they still make me happy to hear [and geez, 10 years since Dookie? I feel old! I remember singing "Basketcase" on the back of the bus on the way to middle school!] So where am I coming from with this 2003 hypothesis? Here's my quick list of great albums from 2003:
Now, I doubt that entire list will still be remotely near my playlist come 2013, but some of the CDs from 2003 really blow me away. The Shins put out an amazingly original disc that proves it's not what you do, but how you do it. The album by The Mars Volta is a sonic masterpiece, with so much going on that it's hard to keep track of it at first but once you do, you love it. Cursive's album is possibly one of my favorites of all time. A.F.I.'s new album shocked me as I had positively hated everything they'd done up to this point, but Sing The Sorrow is absolutely phenomenal. I guess I won't know the answer to this hypothesis for another few years [2008, at least] but I'd assume that a few of them will stay up near the top of my list.

Speaking of albums, I've recently gone on a flurry of listening to new stuff. Here are my thoughts on a few of them:

Cake's Pressure Chief
Cake hasn't completely returned to their days of glory - I liked their first few albums better. The first song on the disc, "Wheels" is one of the best Cake songs I've ever heard though. Now don't take this as a negative review, I liked the disc. I just happened to like Prolonging The Magic and Fashion Nugget better - but those two albums are classics.

Nelly's Suit and Sweat
Two new albums from the rap magnate of the STL. Now to put this review in perspective, please understand that I loved Country Grammar, and I liked Nellyville. So I went into listening to these two albums - Suit is Nelly trying his hand at R&B and being smooth, Sweat is more upbeat and club-friendly - and I expected to at least like something I heard. Not so. These two albums were pretty awful in my mind...I just couldn't even remotely get into either of them. Sweat was the better of the two, but some of the tracks just went beyond mindless and just ended up making my head hurt. Consider these two albums as $25 you're never getting from me, Nelly. Stop making crap music. I completely forgot to mention the album Da Derrty Versions: The Reinvention that came between these two and Nellyville but that's for good reason, the album was completely forgettable, just like these two. Move on, nothing to see here.

Flogging Molly's Within a Mile of Home
For some reason unknown to me, I'd never listened to Flogging Molly before listening to this album - and I hate myself for waiting so long. I'm quite a fan of Irish and Scottish musical styles and if you don't believe me, check my CD collection for all the Dropkick Murphys albums and a copy of The Chieftain's The Best of the Chieftains. I put this CD in my dash on a recent drive over to Jacksonville, not knowing what to expect and I have to say I was very pleasantly suprised. Now I knew what style of music these guys made, but I'd just never taken the time to get into them. I will now though - after a recent binge on Indie music, this album was a nice change from the downbeat emo-ness that I'd been stuck on for a while. This album is a great, happy album.

Sum 41's Chuck
When I heard Sum 41's first full-length album, All Killer No Filler, I wasn't all that impressed and [falsely] wrote Sum 41 off as another mediocre pop-punk band. I didn't get into the album, probably because of my prejudice - later listens proved that I liked the disc. Sum 41's second album Does This Look Infected? is probably the best pop-punk since Green Day's Dookie - a bold claim, but DTLI? was absolutely incredible. Following in the footsteps of 2002's album, Sum 41 gives us 2004's Chuck, which after a few days of listening, I've come to like. It's more musically diverse than their previous efforts, but that's both a good and a bad thing. The album has some amazing highs, but it hits some snags - slow songs kill the pace of the album and take away from its overall effectiveness to rock. Now I really do like the album, but the last one was better. The last one was a classic though - but I still look forward to new Sum 41 stuff when I can get it. They still know how to rock and they still know how to make music that kicks ass. Let's just hope that this flirting with a style change doesn't become permanent. I don't want to lose another good pop-punk band, since good pop-punk is pretty hard to come by [something I've lamented in great detail here].

I went out and bought the Aladdin 2-disc DVD set, and of course I'm thrilled with it. I don't care for the extra stuff, a new Clay Aiken song and Nick and Jessica singing "Whole New World" - but thankfully Disney didn't "add" this stuff to the playtime of the regular movie [like they did with that new song in The Lion King] so when I popped in the disc into my DVD player, it was just a great trip down memory lane from start to finish. I still knew the lyrics to all the songs, and I still loved the whole movie - Robin Williams as the Genie simply made the movie. Possibly the best single performance by a character in a Disney movie [though Patrick Warburton's role as Kronk in The Emperor's New Groove was just amazingly hilarious].

I saw that season one of Fox's award winning comedy Arrested Development is coming out on DVD this coming week. This show is freaking hilarious, and I for one can't wait to both pick up the DVD and to see season two this coming fall on Fox. The only other comedy shows that I like nearly as much as this one are Comedy Central's Chappelle's Show and HBO's Curb Your Enthusiasm, which are both incredible in their own ways. I've been waiting for AD to come to DVD, if for nothing else than the fact that I can get friends into the show. AD is one of those shows that if you miss an episode, you lose the feel of things. I watched the first episode and loved it - it was like an arty-comedy movie brought to my little screen. Like somebody had watched Rushmore too many times and decided to make a TV show like it. If you haven't seen the show, go freaking get the DVD. You will love it.

2004 NFL Predictions [Weeks 1-6]

WEEK 1

Okay, time to start up this year's NFL picks.

Picks are sorted alphabetically by home team. My pick for game winners are in BOLD CAPS. Correct picks are in red and incorrect ones are in yellow. Final score in [brackets]. Incorrect spread picks will be in {yellow}, correct ones in {red}, pushes are in {green}. After the picks is the final score, as well as the Glantz-Culver line info for the spread. Positive numbers favor home teams, negative away. Click for NFL results.

Week 1 (Sep 9-13): Picks 10-5 (0.667), Spreads 6-8 (0.429) [ouch!]

Arizona at ST. LOUIS {ARI} (+11) [10-17]

Week 1 is always a crapshoot. Since all I have to go by is last year's results, and the very, very limited performances by the starters in the preseason, I expect to fudge this up for a couple weeks till I can get a feel for where the season's going this year.

Such A Consumer Whore, I Am

So, being the consumate consumer whore that I am, I've bought far too many DVDs and the like in the past few days. Here are my thoughts on what I've recently picked up:

Star Wars Trilogy [Widescreen]: due to some good pricematching and eagle-eyed attention to online deal sites, I was able to snag this set for $25, total including shipping. Now I wasn't raised in a Star Wars household - my dad was an avid Trekkie. We have all the Star Trek movies on VHS, but we never had a copy of any of the Star Wars movies growing up. So unlike my fellow nerds, I've probably only seen the entire series maybe 2-3 times, including the theatrical reissues in the late 1990s. I've never owned a Star Wars VHS set myself, so when the opportunity came around to get this set, I jumped all over it, just like I did with my much-loved Indiana Jones Trilogy. Watching the three movies in the past day or so really reminds me of a few things. First that the original movie [A New Hope] is good, but far from spectacular. Empire Strikes Back on the other hand is one hell of a movie, and it stands head and shoulders as better than the other two in the set. Return of the Jedi has a lot of cheesy moments, but the second half of the movie [once they start talking about the Death Star 2 and Endor] is where things pick up. Overall, it's a great set that I'm happy to have in my collection at long last. Now let's hope Episode III doesn't completely suck [Episode II hurts my head when I watch it] so that the series can go out on a good note. As far as trilogies go, I'd put Star Wars at 3rd behind Indiana Jones and The Godfather [which loses points for #3].

Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind: I loved this movie when I saw it, so it was a foregone conclusion that I would buy it the very day it came out and watch it again. Sunshine was one of those movies where walking out of the theater you start asking "so when does the DVD come out?" It's a great, original film with a brilliant story and premise. The acting is superb, the presentation is amazing, and it's just an all-around wonderful film experience. If you haven't seen it yet, why?

Jim Henson's The Storyteller and Greek Myths: I am a sucker for all things Jim Henson, and I [vaguely] remember this show when it originally aired in the late 1980s/early 1990s. The Storyteller is just that, a series of tales [or Greek Myths in the case of the 2nd DVD] told by a narrator with characters from Jim Henson's Creature Workshop sprinkled in. A great set of tales, it's a real family treat. As I'm an admitted Classics freak, the Greek Myths DVD really pleased me. The tales are well presented, and in classical Jim Henson style, the mythological monsters and creatures come to life in stunning detail.

Rounders: Collector's Edition: There was something about this movie that I loved when I first saw it. I didn't even understand the rules of Texas Hold'Em like I do today, but I couldn't help but love this story. Matt Damon and Ed Norton are great as two card sharks, and coupled with great cinematography and a stellar soundtrack [the track that plays over the credits, "Baby I'm A Big Star Now" by the Counting Crows, is one of my favorite tracks of all time] this movie really should be seen by everyone. This recently released "Collector's Edition" is packed with special features, including the oddest commentary track I've ever heard. Professional poker players Johnny Chan, Chris Moneymaker, Phil Hellmuth, and Chris "Jesus" Ferguson provide running commentary on one track, where they talk about the hands the players had, how'd they'd react in those circumstances, and other things. A very unique experience, it's a fun one to listen to [I'm not usually huge on commentary tracks, unless we're talking Kevin Smith movies because his commentary in those is usually incredible].

The Last Unicorn: Now you're probably asking what in the hell this is doing here. I remember watching this movie when I was young [3-5, somewhere in there] and loving it. So I stumble upon it again sometime in college, download it, and the nostalgia really kicked in - problem was the DVD wasn't available in the United States. Well on my way out of Best Buy the other day [was fetching "Sunshine"] I saw this on the rack and picked it up without thinking. It's a cartoon, a children's movie, but the fantasy tale told in this story appeals to people of all ages [and I actually think I like it far more now than when I was a child - if anything, I can actually understand the story now]. The haunting images of the giant red, fiery Bull driving unicorns to their death under the crashing waves of the sea is something that I probably wouldn't show my young child, but the movie is still great.

Classic Cartoons: In the past month or so, I've probably picked up 10-15 DVDs of cheap, older cartoons. Things like Popeye, Woody Woodpecker, Betty Boop, Casper, and Superman. Walmart and Walgreens had these classic cartoon DVDs for $1-2 each, so I loaded up and bought all the titles. The real gems are without a doubt the older Superman episodes. Some cartoons in this set, those dated in the early 1940s, were World War 2 propaganda cartoons - and while some would be offended by the blatant cultural stereotypes [see the Superman episode "Japateurs" about some "Sneaky Japs" that hijack a secret new military plane on it's maiden voyage] I love watching these old propaganda cartoons because they give me another window into the history of American society - a side you don't see represented in history books. Regardless, $2 for a DVD full of old classic cartoons is a steal in my mind, so keep putting them out and I'll keep buying them.

Other than working just about every day and buying/watching the aforementioned DVDs, I'm still an avid video gamer. Here's what's been on the rotation as of late:

Burnout 3: Takedown: Still incredible, still impossible to put down. Race cars, crash cars. Simply incredible.

Star Wars: Battlefront: Command the Imperial or Rebel forces in pretty much every major battle that's ever occured in a Star Wars movie - from shooting down Ewoks on Endor from your Imperial Walker to the ever-present Battle of Hoth where you trip up the AT-ATs, this game's a lot of fun and the multiplayer potential is off the charts.

ESPN NHL Hockey 2K5
: Since we're probably not going to get a hockey season this year [something which I have gone in detail about here] this is as close to hockey action as I'm going to get. Sega's ESPN line of Hockey games have been the best on the market for a few years now, and 2K5 follows suit. An amazing game with amazing presentation which includes commentary by Thorne and Clement, ESPN's hockey guys, this is $20 well spent. If you're the type that spends $20 on games, that is.

Tony Hawk's Underground: When I went on my massive Gamecube game-selling binge, I sold my GC copy of THUG and had to start over from scratch on my Xbox. That hasn't been a problem though, as breezing through the earlier levels, even on a harder difficulty, has been a cinch this time. This is a great game, and I applaud Neversoft for putting in a story mode in an action-sports game. It works incredibly well, and I can't wait for THUG2.

There are some upcoming DVDs and Movies that I really can't wait to get/see:

Aladdin: Though there's a Clay Aiken song added to the movie [why, Disney? WHY?!?] this movie is possibly my favorite Disney movie of all time. Robin Williams' performance was top notch as the Genie, and the songs and story were great.

Shaun of the Dead
: if you haven't seen this yet, you really should. It's goddamned hilarious.

Dawn of the Dead: I need to get this DVD, as it was great in the cheap theaters.
